Plantation of Silence

When I speak to some of my black friends and colleagues I am often reticent to reveal that I am conservative. I am finding, though, that this is a disservice to not just myself but to my friends and colleagues. They need to know and understand what being a conservative means.

For instance - I want to keep the money I earn. I don’t mind paying taxes for the good of all (i.e. roads, protection, armed forces); but I do have an issue paying for the able and capable.

I am starting to veer from the plantation of silence more and more. I am asking, ‘why should we be monolithic in our politics’? Democrats will take us for granted and Republicans will try to figure out how to work around us. Either way we are not at the table. We have a black president with less minorities in high level positions than when the “hated” President Bush was in office.

Little by little I am starting to fear the label ‘Oreo’ less. I want to see us prosper as a people and a nation. The plantation of silence will only help to destroy our freedoms, our prosperity, and our very way of being.
